News Jessica Grigg Lila Howard, the Legion Auxiliary President, called a meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 1999, in the home of Georgina Grigg. Roll Call was answered by nine mem- bers giving their Community Service Hours. The Secretary-Treasurer, Georgina, gave her report after which the various committees reported. A pancake breakfast was discussed for the last part of October or first week in November. Please watch this paper for further details. The membership chair- man reported that she has been busy collecting dues. The Main order of business was The Unit School Of In- struction, which was given by the 2 members that attended the County School Of Instruction. After the business matters were taken care of, Jessica Grigg, daughter of Curt and Bonnie Grigg, reported on attend- ing Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Session from June 12 through June 18, 1999 at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Jessica was chosen by the Lawton Le- gion Auxiliary Unit # 718 to attend to learn about politics and Iowa Govern- ment through this "Learning by doing" type .of program. She was appointed to the Agriculture Education Council and was chosen to be Secretary of her Pre- cinct. When asked what impressed her the most; she replied that it had to be the Inauguration night and the Flag Ceremony. Her Mother agreed and showed a Tape of that evening activi- ties. It proved to be very inspiring, interesting and informative as well as ,beautiful at the Flag Lowering ceremo- nies. She passed around a "Memory Book" that she had complied of pic- tures etc. She was very grateful for the opportunity to be a Girls Stater. Any New Contracts 8. Adjourn The Dancing Grannys And Grandpas News "On the Road Again" with the Danc- ers for the Month of August, 1999. The 6th of August found the Dancers en- tertaining at the Woodbury County Fair for Senior Citizens Day in MoviUe. Opening up the 10:30 a.m. program were the "Pistol Packing Mammas", followed by the "Flappers" who done their part to get everybody in a "Fair Mood". Keith Miller entertained with his "saw" and sang a few songs. Giving the gals a chance for a costume change, the guys then joined in with the Line, Circle & Tap dancing. Closing the program was Plush Robinson who done his FLAG PRESENTATION after which "God Bless America" was sung by the dancers and whoever else wanted to join in with them. On August 18 the dancers traveled to Des Moines, Iowa for the State Fair where they entertained on the Walnut Stage at 11:20 a.m. A variety of line dances was done by the 16 Dancers who took part in the Older lowans' Music Contest, sponsored by the Ur- bandale Lions Club, The theme for the Iowa State Fair this year was "Knock Yourself Out, which is what the Gran- nys and Grandpas did, capturing 2nd place in the contest. As tired as the dancers were the next day after the fair, Thursday, August 19, they met at Theo's at I ! :30 for lunch to celebrate the August Birthdays. We were happy to have Betty Sieger join us for lunch, Way to go. Keep up the good work. On Wednesday, August 25 the dane- ers were invited to entertain the rest- dents, staff and guests at the Westwood Nursing Home in Sioux City, Iowa. That is it for the month of August - so until next time - "Keep on dancing to Stay Fit and Have Fun"! Area Pigeon Racer Finishes High In Race Michael Beavers, a third grader at Lawton-Bronson, finished 8th in a field of 138 Racing Homer pigeons in a Labor Day Futurity. Finishing 8 is a real honor for Michael as about 80 of the entries were from many prestigious clubs across the nation. The race was held from Cozad, Ne- braska, some 250 miles from the club in Sloan, Iowa. The birds were driven out during the early morning hours of September 6th and released at 8:45 a.m. The flyers started arriving at the club by 1:04 p.m. and by 1:23 p.m., 30 of the entries were home. The rest stag- gered in as the afternoon went along. Money was paid out to the top 10 birds with the winner receiving $1500.00. All of the entries that find their way home will be the property of the Siouxland Racing Pigeon Club and auctioned off in November. Again, many come from other states to pur- chase these pigeons with all proceeds benefiting the club in Sloan. Assisted Living Facility In Lawton Progressing Construction of Char-Mac As;, sisted-Living facility continues to prog- ress along. The foundation has been laid and the preliminary stubbing of the plumbing has been done. The concrete work should begin the week after Labor Day. Then, the framers will arrive. Soon the actual building will begin to arise, and with it the excitement of a new business for the community. In addition, the street crews will be busy laying the street and entrance to Char-Mac, and bringing the sewer and water across Highway 20. The parking lot will be blacktopped at the end of September. Char-Mac will be a self-contained fa- cility with many amenities under one roof. There will be a beauty shop, whirlpool room, laundry facilities, lounge area, activity center, large for- mal dining hall and a private family dining room. Meals are part of the base package. Char-Mac will be offering three different room sizes, with a kitch- enette. They are as follows; * 24 studios ........................ 350 SQ FT - 12 One bedroom (Can be single or the community members who have inquired about volunteering at the fa- cility. This is a valued service that brightens the lives of those who reside at the facility, and the residents would gladly have you join them at our facil- ity. If you would like to be a volunteer, you may call Jeanine at 944-5223. Construction is to be completed the middle of February with the Grand Opening scheduled for March 1st, 2000. At this time, it appears that the tenants will be able to begin to move their belongings in the last week of February. Then. occupancy will begin March Ist. Room deposits will be accepted Oc- tober 1, 1999. Tenants will be able to guarantee a specific room. Currently there are studio rooms and a few dou- ble occupancy rooms left. Laura Flammang, Reporter City of Lawton Council Proceedings AUGUST 24, 1999 SPECIAL MEETING OF THE LAWTON CITY COUNCIL A special meeting of the Lawton City Council was called to order by Mayor H. Robinson at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Council members present were K. Clay, A. Kolker, A. Peters, D. Grau, and T. Masching. A Public Hearing was held, on the proposed Lawton Urban Renewal District Urban Renewal Plan. Larry Clausen of the Woodbury County Board was present and expressed concern over the statement in the plan that deals with amending the TIF in the future. It was discussed and determined that since the Iowa Code allows for the amendment whether or not it is pnnted in the Plan, it will stand as printed. No other parties were heard at the headng and no written communication was received. The Hearing was closed at 7:10 p.m. Council Member A. Kolker then introduced the following Resolution entitled "RESOLUTION DETERMINING AN AREA OF THE CITY TO BE AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AREA, AND THAT THE REHABILITATION, CONSERVATION, REDEVELOPMENT, DEVELOPMENT, OR A COMBINATION THEREOF, OF SUCH AREA IS NECESSARY IN THE INTEREST OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH, SAFETY OR WELFARE OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE CITY; DESIGNATING SUCH AREA AS APPROPRIATE FOR AN URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT; AND ADOPTING THE CHAR-MAC ADDITION URBAN RENEWAL PLAN THEREFOR" and moved that the same be adopted. Council Member K. Clay seconded the motion to adopt. The roll was called and the vote was, AYES: T. Masching, A. Peters, H. Robinson, D. Grau. NAYS: none.
